Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar has strongly criticized the student strike disrupting West Bengal’s Higher Secondary examinations, calling it unjustified and harmful to students' academic future. He alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led government is deliberately allowing clashes between the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) to escalate, creating instability in educational institutions. “Mamata Banerjee is giving SFI a platform to divide votes. If BJP gets just 4% more votes, we will form the government,” Majumdar claimed. He also accused the state police of entering college campuses without permission and targeting opposition-backed student activists.
The unrest, which started at Jadavpur University over student union election demands, has spread to multiple institutions, including North Bengal University, Midnapore College, and Panskura Banamali College. Violent clashes have been reported between SFI, TMCP, and AIDSO members, leading to injuries. In Siliguri, an SFI supporter was severely beaten, while in Panskura, a female student was allegedly pushed to the ground. In Midnapore College, TMCP members clashed with SFI activists, dragging them out of the campus and handing them over to the police. AIDSO and SFI have accused TMCP of orchestrating attacks, while TMCP leaders claim they are responding to provocation.
At Vidyasagar University, police intervened in a DSO protest, forcibly removing demonstrators and detaining them. In Murshidabad University, TMCP allegedly removed AIDSO posters, leading to further tensions. The incidents have raised concerns over campus safety, with student organizations accusing the state government of bias. Majumdar warned that such disruptions during board exams could severely impact students and called for immediate intervention to restore order. No official response has been issued by the state government regarding the allegations.
